August update was a failure in my opinion. I think everyone here expected it to do much more than it does.
Yeah and no one ever promised you it would do much. After all its an operating system that should get things done - thats if you use it for being productive - oh wait - thats my Windows 7 system lol. You are right - 8.1 is an "after-work, friends, family & fun" System. Hope to see some more professional OS with Win 9 - that is - if MS is still interested in selling corporate licenses
Not everyone. There are people who knew that in advance, also the failure of the OS. Those people are called 'M$ hater' by those who overhyped the update and the OS. They still have time, many companies are just migrated to w7 in the year 2013/14.
They are not going together here. Mandatory is related to the subject / predicate (you provide) and optional to the object (update). sry could not resist.
I can see the time has come for me to make a mandatory update of the optional opinions of fellow posters. OK - all done - you are all nuts. On topic - update 3 machines - 4 OSs 8/12 - all 4 doing well - no issues - no noticeable differences.
Everyone expects something. And expectations lead to premeditated resentments. So stop believing everything you read ABOUT an update, and wait for it to get to your box. Maybe you will be surprised with something that comes or maybe you wont. At least you wont kick puppies or punch kittens because you didn't get something promised by someone who thinks they are in deep with an MS contact (lol e.g. MJF). MS is/should be dumping all eggs into 9, no more 8 regular updates - just security - would be nice imo. Then finish off 8.1 with regular updates until 9 suites me fine.
It's unfair to blame your disappointment in Update 2 on the bloggers. Everybody says they overhyped Update 2, some dare to say Update 2 is just a blogger invention, well neither of those is true. First off, August Update == Update 2, no matter what MS claims, it's simply a name and MS chose not to call it "Update 2" because the changes in it weren't as big and visible as those in Update 1. At one point, however, the update was actually called "Update 2" internally, that's where all the bloggers got the name. Now, if you expected Update 2 to be big then that's your own fault, the only things bloggers claimed would be in Update 2 were Miracast Receive, bugfixes and under the hood changes. They did for a brief time claim that the new Start menu would be included, but a long time ago they clearly said it wouldn't be included after all. If you expected anything more, too bad! Please tell me, what did bloggers promise you that isn't in the August Update?
either MS gangsters had changed the way to go or publication upon 8.2 things, that would never happen, were over-styled. I don't know but current 8.1 sits and runs quite nicely, no?
The August update wiped out my PATH variable. So typing for example "ping" or "nslookup" got a not found error until I re-added %SYSTEMROOT%\System32 back. Just an FYI for anyone else experiencing this issue. i.imgur.com/GDfr9qi.png
So many system configs of one OS on the planet, I guess they missed your config lol For me, the only difference I see is I wasted bandwidth on some non-essential updates and a few critical
I know it's actually sad to see when it's just software I love everything Microsoft comes out with because it can't be matched you will not find anything better. Linux, Apple can't run video games for example. So why hate?
Bloggers, presumably, means the various so-called Pundits around the web. Possibly you have inside information as to >what Microsoft called the update, when they were working with it. The discussion came up on another forum, with disappointed users. To my knowledge, Microsoft have never called this update "Update 2". They never, either, in its early days, made any specific promises regarding what it might contain. The various posters around the web got carried away after initial rumours, and amplified them in order to put their inside knowledge and egos up a notch. I can remember, quite some months ago, Mary Foley quoting something in this respect from her mysterious "inside sources" (I think it is probably Winbeta or the like - lol). The response from MS was " Microsoft spokesperson said that the company had nothing to share about Windows 8.1 Update 2." They never did, right up to the eventual release.
New suggestion on Windows 9/Update 3 : In each app you can choose the option to close+minimize to taskbar or start menu. for example : I prefer morfix dictionary to close to taskbar (because I translate from sites). I prefer Store to close to start menu (because after install/update app I need to run it).
