    ok to check digital signature

    right click the *.msu file

    goto properties

check for a tab called "Digital Signatures"

I am by means no where near as versed in all the behind the scenes of 7 as alot of other people here. But as I have noticed before I was a member here that MDL allows for the download of software, files and able to use links with out being registered. People coming to the site and grabbing a file and installing it may have some bad consiquiences that may adversly affect there machine.

I am going to vote "yes" but on the other hand make the updates available to anyone who special request them. Just have an area to list the current avilable updates with out making them downloadable.

I voted NO as well. I think that it could be regulated, but I see no reason to completely ban them. Some people rely on the information here to make informed decisions about which updates will harm their activation and which ones will not...and some people prefer to download updates here, from trusted posters, rather than hope that some obscure update that MS puts on WU will not disable their activation. The way I see it is if you don't want to download the updates then you don't have to... :p

I feel we should keep them open to users, even in the prerelease stages. Yes, they are untested but, if you are having a major problem with your system and desperate enough to install an untested patch, then you should understand the consequences that can happen.

I vote yes to remove them. However, if they stay I would like to suggest that they be limited. I would hate to suggest another sticky, you guys (admin) just had to clean them out but maybe some common sense rules for posting them.

Every update should have a description of what it does AND a KB article associated with it.

One active update thread and no duplicate packages. If only one person was posting new "leaked" updates and insuring that they meet the meet the guidelines then we wouldn't have 10 active threads arguing the same point.

I understand that some people NEED some of these updates but if we don't try to insure that good information accompanies these updates we will have the occasional threads of people asking for help fixing their computer after such and such update broke something (nothing like trying to fix someones computer over the phone or internet).

+1 leaked updates are pointless. most of them are beta, or from RC, and are irrelevant.

    I voted 'No'.

As long as 'leaked' updates have a valid digital signature from MS, one can consider them to be 'semi-official' and virus-free.

But I agree with the following:
Maybe the poll should have been made in this way:
    * All leaked updates should be banned from MDL.
    * Only update packs in .exe-Format should be banned.
    * The number of available "Update packs" should be restricted (similar to how it was done with loaders).
    * Leaked updates should generally not be banned.

By the way: I installed many leaked updates and never had trouble with any of them.

    Best regards,
    Анди

I voted to keep them, but if we do then we only need to offically support 1 update pack much like we do with the loaders. Most of the time the updates will come out as part of the official release cycle and if they get superseeded so be it.

Yes it could bork your install but you should know that before installing anything considered "pre-release"

I suggested to make the poll with two explicit choices only. Reason: To separate the 'good' inofficial updates would make a great effort necessary.
All them or no one. You can get them from M$ as well with a valid digital signature.

Although I have voted 'yes' I'm against restrictions generally (why else am I a bios modder?)
I'm unsure about. I have voted 'yes' because I don't recommend to install it. I've got a query from a Moderator to remove them, and I disagreed with without to start a poll first.
A good solution could be to post them with a reference link to the corresponding M$ article. All other will be deleted. This could be an option if the poll would be nearly 50/50.
At any other case the majority of votes will decide about.
The poll will run at least until the end of the year.....

    Bullseye !

It's up to the user to decide whether or not he wants them.
Should someone have a particular issue, then one of those updates could fix it for him.

But installing them all blindly is not advised.

Why are there restrictions in links to loaders?
Why are there restrictions in the product keys allowed to be posted?
Why are there restrictions in languages used
Why are there restrictions in sentences (no swearing)
... a well you get the point :)

There are other sources to get unofficial Windows updates... no need for another source here @mdl
And if they end up being allowed.... please...please make a separate section

Anyway, the mods @mdl already have plenty to do... (not complaining about how you guys do your things up till now)
For example. i suggest merging similar topics...these forums are a bitch to search through :(

Practical answer: To be specialised you have to select.
'Biological' aswer: To survive you have to be adaptive. (MDL isn't biological though )
Philosophic answer: As long as the mankind doesn't know what real freedom means, its restricted and thinks there is need to do.

OK, back to the point. The capacity of Moderators isn't sufficient. I don't say the amount of. To work here at MDL a short time, let's say constantly 6 months is no problem at all. To work for years it is!
We are all voluntarily here and have got another profession. I spend about 2 hours per day here. Every day's average....

We are trying to do our best. Next year we think about to exchange / add Moderators....

All kinds of Loaders and SLIC related stuff can screw up your PC much more(when done wrong) than few legit signed MS Updates

I voted yes. They are pointless. I also only get my updates from Windows Update unless it is a hot fix not pushed out by Windows Update and even then I wait till the official release.

Except my driver since it's open source:D

But about the topic: I've voted 'yes' cause all important updates are available through WU and if u need to fix a specific problem of your Wn7 than use google to get the required hot-fix.
