Newbie to this forum with a problem needs help please.

I have an old Toshiba T9000 (pentium III; 32 bit; 1GB RAM; 40GB HDD) on which I have a new install of win 7 but windows update doesn't work So I poked around installed a few KB as advised in other forums and got ti to a point where it installed about 70 updates and failed on the rest and eventually after several goes one update KB4474419 caused the computer not to boot.

Then I came across UpdatePack7R2.25.1.15 so gave that a go (fresh install of win7) but all I got was
    Unpacking
Pop up message: DISM Image servicing Utiity has stopped working
    then maybe 30 secs later
Another Pop message: Failed to start DISM please check SRP

DISM starts fine when started in a DOS box
the System Reserved Partition looks fine.

Any advice on how to move forward would be gratefully received

SSE (only) support for W7 was abandonned by Microsoft in 2017 if I remember correctly.

Maybe but w7 SP1 was released in 2011 so there should be at least 6 years of updates lying around somewhere
Maybe an earlier relase of the Update Pack is the answer?

Pentium 3 is a non-SSE2 capable CPU. I doubt that will work because somewhere in the lifecycle of windows 7, SSE2 support became mandatory. Lots of software will also not work like browsers. With a CPU with that limitation, I would stay away from Windows

It's not recommended nor supported to use older updatepacks.

IIRC SSE2 support became mandatory in February 2018, one month after the Meltdown/Spectre disaster. There were no patches at all in January.

There is some misconception here that often causes confusion.

The IE11 browser and the underlying Trident web engine must not be confused. The IE11 browser can be neglected or just removed, but the web engine is deeply baked into the OS (back from the Win95 IE4 "Active Desktop" update until recent Windows 11 versions). It is used in a lot of places to draw UI elements, Desktop backgrounds, and Explorer windows. So, even without the IE11 browser being used at all, updating the web engine is still necessary as it's being used all the time by the OS.
