i see what some of you are saying, but you are making it more complicated than it really is, or ever will be.

people smoke because it's a choice. you can say you are addicted, but that's not the problem at all. you are choosing to smoke every time you light one up. your addiction does not make you smoke regardless of how "addicted" you are. it is your choose, plain and simple.

just like you choose to smoke, you have to choose to quit, and that's all there is to it. if it was any more complicated than that no one would ever be able to quit... and the people who quit and start back just haven't been honest with themselves and seeing that they are the ones that brought themselves back to the cig, not an "addiction." take responsibility for your choices and you will find the will power you need to quit if you so choose.

no one needs a plan, or a crutch, or a replacement therapy, all it takes is one simple choice to not smoke and to continue making that choice day in and day out, period. i've broken many "addictions" with this, including hard drug "addictions" with simple choice. blaming things on an "addiction" is nothing but an excuse from people who don't want to do what is necessary, and i've made that excuse before in the past before i was ready to just do what was necessary to kick the habit(s).

11 months cig/nic free tomorrow and counting

Again a great post. You are absolutely right...I had posted that in short here: http://forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/889-Stop-Smoking?p=12127&viewfull=1#post12127

To use the word addiction or 'I am addicted' makes it easy to deny responsibility for own actions. You have started to smoke, you can stop.
Basically there is only one heavy physical addiction........when using opiats /opioids such as Heroin or Fentanyl Citrate without to treat real pain (abuse)....therefore you need support of a doctor...
Nicotine 'withdrawal' is finished after 24 hours already...there is no excuse....

If you don't stop to smoke, you just don't want to, that's all. Make a clear decision!
    I have..I don't want to stop smoking...I enjoy it.

@alex..all the best. You will make it!

Thanks Yen. ;) Day three and still feeling good.

I have to add a little to this. The book helped me to realise two things...... firstly like most smokers i was addicted to the nicotine not the cigarette ( the delivery system ). Secondly that its the brainwashing that keeps a smoker smoking.

Admit that you are addicted. Realise the cravings are barely noticeable in a physical way and they are over quickly if you dont ponder on them ! We sleep all night , yet dont wake at 2 am for a cigarette !

Realise that the tobacco companies have brainwashed you to be fearfull of the cravings. They have made you think you cannot cope, that you will be stressed. Rememeber before you smoked ....... you got stressed and you coped.

Another thing ... remember that first cigarette ? It tasted awfull didnt it ? It made you dizzy, sick, even made you cough. You didnt like it you learned to like it just like all smokers. You worked really hard to like it. Can that really be right ? I eat a piece of fruit because it tastes good , i dont need to work at liking it !

Just a few points from the book i mentioned earlier. If any of you are thinking of quiting then i urge you to read the book. "Allen Carr's Easyway To Stop Smoking".

Yes, there are learned situations at which you have combined to smoke with to manage a special situation. I did it to manage stress I had right before exam. And after meal to enjoy it together with a good cup of coffee.
I also smoked at work at break but at work I don't anymore. I had stopped that 5 years ago.
I enjoy smoking one to 3 cigarettes after work. So I am actually without them from 11 pm till next evening. I never wake up cause I need to smoke.

There are no real withdrawal phenomena, it's all in your mind. I also smoke when I am on the way at holidays as a backpacker, then sometimes much more, one box per day.

ATM it's fine as it is for me.
Subjective taste can change, for instance I never liked cheese and stuffed olives. Now I love it. The only and big difference is I never had to cough when tried it the first time, and neither cheese nor olives are harmful to you.
Cigarette manufactures are brainwashing you, that's right. But they don't put the cigarettes into my mouth, it's me doing it.
I have to live with the fact that I don't want to stop it completely. I haven't completely resolved the mechanism---after work--> enjoy cigarettes. It's the rewards system that says I have worked the entire day now I have the right to enjoy my evening with cigarettes. When it resolves, I'll stop....times can change.

What stayboogy said is 100% correct and perfectly said. Cheers bro ;)

I have never smoked in my life and wont start at all.WHY? first i have my money on better things to spend (when you think about how much you smoke every day and calculate that over a month, lot of money comes out)
Second some of my "FRIENDS"wanted to persuade me to smoke, said i would be gay and a loser if i don´t smoke,TOTAL BULLs**t.I think if you don´t have the strenght to say no to something, then you are a loser.

@ Alextheg i think it´s good that you want to stop smoking, the first 1-2 weeks are the hardest.Just try to say to yourself no,if you really badly need a cigarette and can´t stop thinking of it,try to do some activatie to get your mind away from the cigarette. Don´t know if it will help mate,me as a no smoker thinks that it might help a bit

GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL SMOKE STOPPER TRYIERS

    Stop this

I have thought about quitting a few times. But I enjoy it & don't really want to quit.I was going to try the electric water vapor cigg thing, but still hesitant.I heard you are at higher risk getting lung infections then real smoke.Your diet is more important them anything.Just cause you quit smoking, doesn't always mean you will live longer. Many people get cancer, never smoked & haven't been around smoke.Anything can cause anything these days.Best nutrient to keep in a smokers diet is selenium. Here is my opinion, keep a good diet.Live your life how you want, just don't do anything in excess.

I'm giving up smoking now, at present on Champix for 12 weeks and no side effects yet....There is no magic cure for smoking, but Champix comes close....The one thing to remember; it only takes 4 cigarettes to become addicted and this is if you have never smoked before. Unfortunately it will only take 1 cigarette to become addicted again if you have given up smoking....So as an ex-smoker you will always have to be on your guard....Anyway, Good Luck ! to all who are thinking about or who are giving up the ** Devil Weed **:hug2::biggrin:

Yeah, I read that book 11 weeks ago. I've not had one cigarette since and I feel great. An amazing book that owned my eyes after 20,years as a smoker.
