Greed comes from ego so when you say ego you are talking about it holistically, which is perfectly fine.

    So does love...

We must ask what kind of ego, which part of ego...???

Ego is irreducible to greed and suchlike... Otherwise, we lose a lot more than we bargained for...

It depends on how you define it, many people use ego as a way of representing all that is bad about the self.
Hence the term egotistical idiot :laie:

Feel free to choose 'which' part of ego I mean :)

To grow should IMHO mean to recognize that 'things' have no real value, no value per se, or the value which one assigns to them. Only then one can 'enjoy' things and let them go if changing circumstances demand to let them go.

To the ego there is no 'enough', because to ego there is a future that promises 'more' and 'more' is needed because the ego always has the idea something is not completed yet.

So all is reasoned in the idea of identification =self assignment of an illusionary value.
If 'things' would be responsible for happiness then there would be no 'poor' people being happy. The contrary is true, people living in the high tech world are suffering more from unhappiness than 'poorer' societies.
If you cannot agree with this then you have to ask yourself 'who' cannot? Isn't it the ego?

We have to work more and more to feed that illusion, stress related diseases (heart attack, stroke, depression, abuse of meds) are typical for high tech societies, but actually unknown to poorer societies.

'Love' that comes from ego is hidden greed, because if one ends the relationship it creates suffer.
It turns out that the own value one had seen in this 'love' was an illusion.

We needs 'things' temporarily to satisfy our temporary existence as human on earth. But we don’t need them to achieve an illusionary goal in the future. This goal is not to become the one who has gathered most of things and say Ha I am the winner!

There is growth of humankind, but also the own temporary existence as human on earth which demands to let things go sooner or later.
One can only develop a healthy relationship to 'things' when respecting their impermanent character.
Without self-awareness that is the way like I am already it is not possible.

At first sight that might be contradictory to 'human growth outside in the world' in a high tech world like OK I am already I have to do nothing anymore.
No... one can only create 'healthy' and creative works with the self-awareness to be already 'completed'. Not completed as 'form/ appearance' but the inner-self which is indeterminable.

One does not create for oneself anymore one creates to create. 'rechtes Handeln'.

Science and tech create out of an ego illusion and have no awareness. Only goal is to keep that illusion by any means. As saviour for the ego to make us egos immortally (literally) happy...with new smart-phones, new organs,..all to 'create' more 'pleasant' time..we need to become..xyz yeah to fool the 'law' of impermanence of things...better said to distract from the truth of the law.

    Sorry for a little OT...:)

Physicists just discovered a totally new form of light

Physicists have just discovered a new form of light that doesn't follow our existing rules of angular momentum, and it could shake up our understanding of the electromagnetic radiation and lead to faster, more secure optical communication.
Because of how well-studied and, well, everywhere, light is, you might assume that we've pretty much learnt all there is to know about it. But just last year, researchers identified a fundamental new property of light, and now a team of Irish scientists has shown that light can take on unexpected new forms.
One of the ways we measure a beam of light is through its angular momentum - a constant quantity that measures how much light is rotating. And until now, it was thought that for all forms of light, the angular momentum would be a whole number (known as an integer) multiple of Planck's constant - a physical constant that sets the scale of quantum effects.
But researchers led by Trinity College Dublin have now demonstrated that a new form of light exists, where the angular momentum is only half of this value.
"What I think is so exciting about this result is that even this fundamental property of light, that physicists have always thought was fixed, can be changed," said lead researcher Paul Eastham.
Let's back up for a second here and explain what all that means... more

Why don’t birds get lost? They may have mastered quantum mechanics.

In the moment after their plane was hit, there was no time to think, let alone radio their position. The four Royal Air Force pilots ditched their broken bomber and dropped into the North Sea, near Britain. It was February 23, 1942 — and it should have been their last day on Earth.
Floundering in the frigid water, the pilots released their last hope: a tiny, bedraggled carrier pigeon named Winkie. She'd been inside a container the whole flight and was covered in oil from the crash. It wasn't clear that she would survive the 120-mile flight back home, or know how to get there.
But a few hours later, Winkie showed up at the home of her owner, who notified British authorities in time to launch a rescue mission. Without her, the four men might never have been found in the vast ocean... more

    Is Infinity Real?

Euclidean geometry has a way of turning mathematically inclined students into lifelong math lovers, and I was no exception. But a primitive assumption has always troubled me: The definition of a “geometric point” refers to something that has position, but no dimensions, so there can be an infinite number of them in any given line segment. While you can imagine such a thing in the abstract world of mathematics, it cannot be realized at a physical level by a real-world object... more

Experimental Zika vaccines work in mice, protect with one shot

As Zika virus outbreaks continue to rage in South and Central America, lapping at US borders, scientists are making significant strides toward an effective vaccine.
Two types of experimental Zika vaccines, a DNA vaccine and an inactivated virus vaccine, were each able to completely protect mice with one dose, researchers report Tuesday in Nature. The animal data—the first to be published for Zika vaccines—follows news last week that the Food and Drug Administration gave two companies the green light to test another Zika DNA vaccine in humans. The companies, not associated with the researchers behind today’s study, reported that they have done similar animal studies with their vaccine, but they didn’t publish the results.
With today’s animal data, researchers are hopeful about the fate of the vaccines. “The protection was striking,” Dan Barouch, a study coauthor and vaccine researcher at Harvard Medical School, said in a press briefing. “Of course we need to be cautious about extrapolating results from mice into humans,” he noted, but the strength of the findings “certainly raise optimism” that we’re on our way to a safe and effective vaccine... more

Computer can now generate true random numbers.

If you think: Lol, wtf? Then you are probably not aware that it is not easy at all for a computer to generate true random numbers.

Usually a computer needs a way (algorithm) to generate (pseudo)random numbers.
Once the algorithm is uncovered the numbers are not random anymore and cryptography based on such becomes vulnerable.

A generator that did not require user interaction (mouse movement, touch screen patterns...) could not do that until now....(what’s app for instance calculates own pseudo random keys without user interaction to encrypt messages, threema and PGP require such user interaction to gather randomness (entropy) to generate true random keys)...

Denuvo, the strongest game DRM available, has allegedly been cracked

    August 10, 2016

To say that pirates have had trouble cracking Denuvo anti-tamper technology is an understatement. Pretty much every game that uses Denuvo DRM has remained uncracked, thanks to the extremely tough and very well engineered systems that prevent crackers from modifying game files without causing errors.

In the last couple of days, however, it appears as though a cracking team has finally managed to defeat Denuvo. TorrentFreak is reporting that 'scene' group CONSPIR4CY has released a version of Rise of the Tomb Raider that includes a full crack for Denuvo, the DRM tech that has prevented pirates from playing the game for free since its launch in January this year. This Denuvo crack comes shortly after a bypass system for the DRM tech was discovered over the weekend, and then promptly patched by the developers of Denuvo.

An exploit that used the Doom demo's Denuvo activation system allowed pirates to bypass Denuvo in other games, although this exploit was only usable for around three days before it was disabled.
However with the release of a cracked version of Rise of the Tomb Raider, it seems as if current iterations of Denuvo have been properly defeated. There is hope among the pirating community that other Denuvo titles, such as Doom, Mirror's Edge Catalyst, Far Cry Primal and more, could be cracked using a similar method.

There is a strong chance that whatever unpatched exploit has been discovered in Denuvo will be patched in a future version, however this will do little to prevent pirates from playing existing Denuvo titles.

Adblock Plus is already blocking Facebook's unblockable ads

    August 12, 2016

Just two days after Facebook changed their ad delivery mechanisms to defeat ad blocking technology, Adblock Plus has begun blocking Facebook ads once again through an update to their ad filters.

This honestly isn't that surprising. Every time a company comes out and claims they have found a way to stop ad blockers, the developers of said ad blockers find a way to block ads once more. Adblock Plus has stated that "this sort of back-and-forth battle between the open-source ad-blocking community and circumventers has been going on since ad blocking was invented."

Facebook is understandably annoyed that their ad-block blocker has been defeated so quickly. The company also believes that the new filter for blocking Facebook ads is removing some legitimate content.

This latest saga began when Facebook introduced a change to ad signifiers, which they thought made ad content indistinguishable from regular content. However all Adblock Plus had to do was find "the non-standard indicators they began using" and their extension would block Facebook ads once more.

World's Smartest Physicist Thinks Science Can't Crack Consciousness

I’ve been writing a lot lately about consciousness, the ultimate enigma. I used to think why there is something rather than nothing is the ultimate enigma. But without mind, there might as well be nothing.
Some mind-ponderers, notably philosopher Colin McGinn, argue that consciousness is unsolvable. Philosopher Owen Flanagan calls these pessimists “mysterians,” after the 60’s-era rock group “Question Mark and the Mysterians.”
Recently, physicist Edward Witten came out as a mysterian. Witten is regarded with awe by his fellow physicists, some of whom have compared him to Einstein and Newton. He is largely responsible for the popularity of string theory over the past several decades. String theory holds that all of nature's forces stem from infinitesimal particles wriggling in a hyperspace consisting of many extra dimensions.
Witten is optimistic about science’s power to solve mysteries, such as why there is something rather than nothing. In a 2014 Q&A with me he said: “The modern scientific endeavor has been going on for hundreds of years by now, and we've gotten way farther than our predecessors probably imagined.” He also reaffirmed his belief that string theory will turn out to be “right.”
But in a fascinating video interview with journalist Wim Kayzer, Witten is pessimistic about the prospects for a scientific explanation of consciousness. The chemist Ash Jogalekar, who blogs as “The Curious Wavefunction,” wrote about Witten’s speech and transcribed the relevant section. (Thanks, Ash.) Here is an excerpt:
I think consciousness will remain a mystery. Yes, that's what I tend to believe. I tend to think that the workings of the conscious brain will be elucidated to a large extent. Biologists and perhaps physicists will understand much better how the brain works. But why something that we call consciousness goes with those workings, I think that will remain mysterious. I have a much easier time imagining how we understand the Big Bang than I have imagining how we can understand consciousness...
Just because Witten is a genius does not mean he is infallible. He is wrong, I believe, that string theory will eventually be validated, and he could be wrong that consciousness will never be explained. I nonetheless find it newsworthy—and refreshing--that a scientist of his caliber is talking so candidly about the limits of science. For reasons that are perhaps too obvious, I like Ash Jogalekar’s take on Witten’s comments. An excerpt:
It's interesting to contrast Witten's thoughts with John Horgan's End of Science thesis… The end of science really is the end of the search for final causation. In that sense not just consciousness but many aspects of the world may always remain a mystery. Whether that is emotionally pleasing or disconcerting is an individual choice that each one of us has to make.
