Don't know whether this'll help but I remember having activation problems on a modded bios with FSC SLIC. None of the certificates I could lay my hands on worked. Ultimately I used one of the loaders (dont remember which one but perhaps Omdhar's) to install the cert and it worked.
Thanks venu. Thing is, it activated perfectly from day one. Not a single hiccup. It's only since this morning, since installation of WAT, that all of a sudden things go tits up.
I have a question about WAT. My motherboard is GA-P35C-DS3R (rev. 2.0) I'm using the latest BIOS version (F12 - 2009/06/19) which I patched myself, using awardtool113 - and the HPQOEMSLIC-MPC.XRM-MS cert. I then only used 2 commands - slmgr -ilc HPQOEMSLIC-MPC.XRM-MS and slmgr -ipk (dell ultimate key) Using Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I've seen someone who got detected with the early WAT release, and some discussions about static/dynamic mods. Is it safe for me to install WAT once it's officially released? should I re-patch my BIOS in a different way? Thanks in Advance
If you get desperate enough, perhaps you could restore your original BIOS and try Daz's loader. At least then you could try certificates from other OEMs, and remove any possibility of your BIOS mod causing a WAT violation. Of course this will change nothing if WAT permanantly deactivates you when it detects a violation. You can always put the modded BIOS back later.
I don't know how different WAT will be from now to when it's officially released, but, as it is, I regret installing it. I'm like you, I have a modded SLIC 2.1 bios, matching cert and leaked key. All was fine until.. WAT. Now I can't seem to do anything to activate it again.
I'm interested in WAT and how it works.....and what it can perform. Anyway don't forget WAT will be an optional update. You don't have to install it. You'll still receive all W7 updates through the updater and W7 will remain activated...no panic....
IMHO that's no good idea, the OS is screwed in some way already! Install W7 again, clean install, activate it like before...don't try WAT again or at least make an image before you try it again....anyway I'm convinced it's no biosmod issue...
it will be same, jesus... MS does not make "new utility" (specialy not so important as WAT) and then release it tomorrow. It goes thrue extensive testing and ~a month feels like solid timetable for something like this. And yes shocker, this WAT version was signed and created on 12th of jan. Also about your issue, this WAT didnt do much since obviously signature files are not avilable yet. So consider this as antivirus without definitions... it doesnt do much does it? Why you can activate and what went f**ked up with you, i dont know. Maybe its WAT fault, maybe its not, but its certanly not because "it would detect your bios mod", because signature files with "activation exploits" are not avilable yet! I have this WAT (+ all other updates) installed on 2 computers, both with AMI dynamic mod and both are still activated.
This question was made too early.....I suggest to make an image of your installation before you try for WAT.....so you may restore your system easily. We know almost nothing about what it'll detect......the reports of the users will bring the informations....
Before I have a break at MDL my opinion about WAT: That's what makes me sick. WAT phones home!!! Another loss of privacy! Like an (anti)virus service...what an cute expression! M$ has not the right to spy on my PC...all the legit users have to do what M$ wants, to let them have a look at their PC's....a huge US American company thinks it can afford all that action.... F**K *ff..... I don't care if biosmods or loaders become disabled....it's a sort of sports.....they react, we react.....good to learn again....or to quit if I dont want to play that game........all legit users are a victim of M$ spying more and more on PCs...poor world...poor M$....... Basically M$ implies that everybody is a pirate! A legit user that has bought W7 has to prove that the OS is genuine.
Ok, this is weird. I woke my computer from Sleep mode this morning. Right before I logged in I heard the Notification/Default sound play. Puzzled I logged in, an official looking popup window was visible for a split second before disappearing. A couple seconds later I got a little window with the "You may be a victim of software piracy." I clicked OK to get rid of it. My System panel still says I'm activated and I seem to be able to check for Updates just fine. And I haven't got the WAT update yet either. Strange...
If things gets ugly... I'll just go back to WinXP, so far is the best M$ has produced until now (for daily uses). Win7 still has bugs, isn't that good yet on compatibility, and didn't see any real advance until now other than simple cosmetic stuff. For me, I would use Linux, but there are a lot programs Linux still lacks, and you cannot compare them running under Wine. Edit: M$ always loved to spying us, specially on messenger/hotmail/msn/andotherM$craps, 99.9% don't knows all the chat there is logged and saved for at least five years! This is why I don't use that crap!
Agreed altho' an optional update - but the principle is sickening - M$ should at least warn users that this thing is "spyware"!!!
I have a Windows 7 install activated by a bios mod on a spare hard drive. I view Windows 7 as a toy to fool around with and would not consider running it on my work computer. I think that when WAT detects an exploit it tries to make a permanent change that cannot be undone; however, it is possible that restoring the registry with a previous ERUNT backup could undo the change. I plan to install WAT after an ERUNT backup when WAT is officially released. If WAT detects my exploit I will uninstall WAT then do an ERUNT backup. If I end up with a permanently deactivated Windows 7 its no real loss.
I would say as long as you have a good SLIC placement then everything should be fine. From version 1 of my application I had it link up the SLIC and certificate the best it could to a brand so there should be only a handful of people who may be effected because their brand may not be listed, maybe updating to the latest version of the loader and installing a SLIC that goes with their motherboard before installing WAT would help. I don't think WAT targets a loaders placement but rather the SLIC placement, mismatches and system file modifications. This means some people might get hit because the SLIC may not be placed well enough under the default mode on their setup. There is absolutely no way to guess which mode is the best either but I would suggest if people download Everest and it says you have an emulated SLIC that you try booting under a different activation mode (hold R at startup, do it this way in case the other modes don't work and lock you out from Windows). Personally I'm just waiting for the day and then I will work from there. It could just be that MS are just making a load of noise to look good in the media because I have never heard of 70 activation techniques On the day just don't install this update, wait for feedback from people who will give it a good testing first.
WAT is just being over hyped. I don't know why forumites are afraid. Even if WATU surpases expectation, we've got Daz, Hazar, PAYMYRENT and Nononsense here. I wonder why all the fuss about WAT. It will come and go, and we'll all laugh at M$.
