Ya.... but with a Tesla you could get the family in the car too. Although going @ 300km/h will only get you on the road for an hour or so....Then a 35 minute fast recharge. The perfect ride for family vacations!

"In this research and development project, the University of Tokyo is responsible for the formulation and iteration of the concept of wireless charging in-motion for in-wheel motors as well as for the research and development of fundamental technologies. NSK will oversee the development of in-wheel motors that are more easily incorporated into vehicles by utilizing technologies cultivated through previous in-wheel motor projects. They also will explore possible methods of installing the necessary wireless charging infrastructure into society. Bridgestone will lead the tire development process to foster the highly efficient supply of electricity to in-wheel motors during charging by the technology of the material for tires."

Finally, An Electric Crate Motor You Can Drop Into Your Old Car

The idea of converting classic cars to EVs has been around a while, and a number of companies, including some major automakers, have been retrofitting old, classic cars with all-new EV drivetrains. Individual tinkerers have been doing this as well, but it’s not as easy as you’d hope. Dealing with salvaged EV drivetrains is difficult, with complex control and cooling systems. Now it finally looks like there’s going to be an easier way, as Swindon Powertrain is planning on introducing an all-in-one compact EV crate motor next year.

I think that the technology is a good step in the right direction, but they're clearly superior for city driving than any kind of distance driving.
If that's all you're gonna use it for, knock yourself out. Heck, the more popular they become, the more charging stations will pop up everywhere.

"Ford introduces largest EV charging network in North America
    [IMG]
Ford is giving future all-electric vehicle customers the confidence to enjoy a hassle-free electric lifestyle. By providing easy access to more electric vehicle public charging stations in North America than any other automaker, Ford will make it easier for customers to find a place to charge when the company starts delivering new models next year. For more information see the IDTechEx report on Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure 2019-2029: Forecast, Technologies and Players.

The Ford all-electric vehicle charging strategy features comprehensive at-home charging options and the nation's largest network of public charging stations, including DC fast charging. And with both at-home and on-the-go charging powered by the FordPass app and in-vehicle screen, many customer hesitancies surrounding electric vehicle ownership are being addressed.

"Among people who already own or want to purchase electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids, 48 percent say that a lack of charging stations is one of their main concerns," said Ted Cannis, Ford director of global electrification. "By offering industry-leading charging access we are dismantling those barriers, allowing more customers to confidently enjoy the benefits of owning an electric vehicle."

Amazon Home Services to offer installation of home charging setups. Whether Ford customers need a 240-volt outlet installed or you choose the Ford Connected Charge Station option, they will be able to see upfront pricing estimates and schedule a licensed and vetted electrician online.

Ford is providing two years of complimentary access to North America's largest network - the FordPass Charging Network - for easy and convenient pay-as-you-drive charging. The FordPass Charging Network includes more than 12,000 charging stations with more than 35,000 plugs, making public chargers as common as some of the most popular pharmacy or coffee chains. Ford is working with Greenlots to bring together multiple charging providers to develop the FordPass Charging Network, making it easy for customers to find and pay for charging all through FordPass or their vehicle's screen. Ford will work with Greenlots to explore adding additional networks to the FordPass Charging Network in the future for even further coverage.

battery from 10 percent to 80 percent full charge in 45 minutes using an Electrify America DC fast charger.

"The fact that most of our customers will plug in at home is a key advantage to an all-electric vehicle," said Matt Stover, Ford director of charging, energy services and business development. "We will deliver a charging experience that is hassle-free whether you're at home or on-the-go."

Ford will keep electric vehicle drivers fully connected whether charging at home or on the road through the FordPass app. Customers can set charging schedules and alerts at home and easily pre-condition their vehicle before they drive. A key feature within FordPass, and available through a vehicle's on-screen dashboard, is FordPass Power My Trip, a tool that makes trip planning hassle-free by considering the vehicle's current state of charge and identifying charging points along each route.

Ford is investing $11.5 billion in electrified vehicles through 2022 and is focused on the customer journey from end to end, including education ahead of purchase, and an easy shopping and ownership experience."

An induction pad the could be placed on the garage floor would be much more convenient, because we yanks would be too lazy to go through the bother to plug it in every night

I belong to the 'yes-sayers'...reading here frequently about nay-sayers...I want to add it's not black and white. Creating extremes is of no help.
    Anything has pro and cons.

There are upcoming 'issues' a reasonable mind can anticipate and should be discussed in advance to find a solution in time.

What I consider as 'issues' does change but they are ATM (considering the development of e-vehicles has reached a state where they really play a role in the near future)...

    -Charging capacity.
Consider everybody living in 'your' street is at home at evening time and plugs in the charger. Will the grid stand and provide the needed voltage, or is a breakdown expected?

    -Battery technology.
Can lithium Ion be available to supply the demand? Or is it a bridge technology to another technology such as fuel cell which also supplies an electric engine but the fuel will be hydrogen, which uses less resources and the production would be far more environmentally friendly?

Is there enough research/development on alternative fuels to supply the e-vehicles?

-Finally the governmental means to make us moving to the e-vehicles.
Is tax increase without to give something back the right means?
How can somebody (person on an average wage) afford an (more expensive) e-vehicle if fossil fuels get more and more expensive, flights and other services to travel as well?

That can only work if somebody who already drives a car with low fossil fuel consumption gets the tax difference back at tax equalisation at the end of the year...

It's the 'normal' people who already drive a small car with low consumption who cannot afford to buy a e-vehicle and they should also pay more taxes? How should they ever move to the more expensive e-vehicles then?

This only works if they get back the taxes and the others like SUV drivers and the like (big engine drivers) won't!

This is a drawback initiated by lady Thunberg I am sorry to say...the politicians try to jump on the green train but without concept...

General punishment just like more taxes on fossil fuels only or on flights does not work!
By raising taxes no single CO2 molecule emission will be saved. You have to 'escort' the people when they should move and it must be affordable.

Ermmm, no, these are not exactly "neglected" issues here, Yen - mercifully...

Fossil fuel is subsidised and heavily so. Time to turn the tables on them. HIGH TIME!!! RENEWABLES NOW!

Much research is going into batteries and new ones are rather promising (have a look back at silicon etc. based ones)...

Capacity is the state job, really - and once we make the strategic change - it will happen. AAMOF it is happening as we speak...

Science and technology are not exactly easy to stop, so I would give it 10 - 20 years max before the nay sayers MUST be laughing their arses off at themselves, as they once were... :D

Prices? Kona is a bit over £30.000. Falling! Fuel? Electricity is much cheaper than fossil fuel.

This will soon be very cheap and affordable for most people.

Electric Today is cheaper to charge your car.
Today when it's hot outside everybody turns on their air conditioning the utility company can not keep up with demand and they ask people to turn their t-stats up to lessen the power demand.
What the F***K do you think is going to happen on a really hot day (global warming ya know) when everybody comes home from work and needs to plug in their cars too!
I know one thing for sure.... It ain't going to be cheap for that type of demand for electric energy... and they will have us by the short and curly's when that day arrives.
Today electric cars sound like a great idea but without competition for electric power, we will be at the mercy of the utility company even more than we are right now. I can personally testify that utility companies right now Today are merciless already when they demand payments

You have to be living in some kinda pipe dream to think that electric to power our cars in the future will be cheap

Which is why it is the job of the state to step in, take strategic decisions, stop subsidising the fossil fuel industry (pollution and all), invest in alternatives which - thank Science and tech advances - are getting cheaper and better by the day, create the conditions in which we can have plenty of energy from renewables...

But also better infrastructure, for instance better, self-regulating buildings, demanding less energy, better materials, more trees in our cities reducing the temperature and generally not to be stoopid US-style and not build cities in a fookin' desert, maaaan... You know, work with, not against nature and all that...

But oh no, some live in a cloud cookoo land, where it's possible to go on thinking like a capitalist bitch, never seeing wood for the trees, living in the past - forever happily polluting and "thinking" you can have fossil fuel forever, even though it is a limited resource...

Did I mention that one would not have to wage endless wars to get their hands on fossil fuel (as it is the basis of our economy, from agriculture onwards)?

Think about that for a little while... Let that sink in...
