I've been occasionally having a startup problem with WUMT on one of my Win 10 machines but, become more frequent and is now occurring on two (of three) Win 10 machines. Below is the the most recent start failure on a Win 10 21H2 (Build 19044.1889). Did you by any way play with WU Registry Settings ? (it's happen to me to, when I run a specific script, that change WU to disable Mode)
It was a long time i used this. Is there anything you need to do except just run it out of box? Will WU try to update or does every updates go through WUMT? Do i need to disable WU anywhere?
I don't recall changing anything related to wuausserv but, it's possible that something else I use might have. I have been using WUMT for a very long time and it proved to be reliable. I would say do not tweak WU settings outside of Group Policy which implies only using Pro or variations of it like Enterprise or Education full. I have no experience with Home editions and I would strongly suggest avoiding them if possible at all due to their limitations.

Thanks. Very informative. My current work-around is: when the error occurs, I re-start WUMT running as TI. WUMT is able to change whatever parameter it wants to and stops complaining. Thereafter, WUMT will start correctly (w/o TI) for about a week but, eventually the error re-occurs. The work-around is not a big issue for me but is not something I would not want to deploy to my users.
i did wonder why my script keep kill WU ... i used this command ... and now i understand why Code: sc config DoSvc start=disabled
Just noticed that I have WaaSMedicSvc disabled. WUMT could be trying to start WaaSMedicSvc without success.
Your workaround works, but indicates an underlying issue nevertheless. You might want to consider an upgrade repair in place to fix your system.
