The guide in post #1 has been updated to reflect changes to steps #16 and #18 and the Internet Explorer 9 batch file. These are the January 2025 updates at the Microsoft Update Catalog which are available for Windows Server 2008 SP2 64-bit: KB5050682 Servicing Stack Update KB5049994 Internet Explorer 9 KB5050063 Security Monthly Quality Rollup KB5049627 Microsoft .NET Framework 4.6.2
Just a heads up, I have been unable to get Windows Update to work on 32-Bit Vista on 3 different VMs after installing the latest SMQR. All the usual tricks have been applied. WU_Datastore Fix, .NET BYPASS, using legacyupdate server etc, etc. But I am being met with the same error over and over again. Haven't tested 64-Bit yet, but this only happens after this month's SMQR has been installed. Was working fine with the Dec SMQR installed. Datastore.edb grows to around 450MB but then WU stops after about 20 seconds and throws up the 8007000E error again. Not sure if it's a mixture of the latest Servicing Stack and SMQR causing the issue, but everything was going okay until this month. Rolled back to the Dec SMQR and all working okay again. I'll do some more tests including on 64-Bit, but if anyone else is having this issue, can they post about it here? Maybe it's something that will be fixed in next month's SMQR, but who knows?
Burdus77: I test only with Windows Vista SP2 64-bit, and it's installed in normal mode and not in VM mode. I'm very busy with other computer-related work, so I don't intend to do another complete test of the guide anytime soon to determine what issues there are. I'm also considering stopping my work on the guide and letting someone else here take over it.
This is a legacy update issue that happens only on VMs I am not sure why (maybe bandwidth management?). Never had a problem on a laptop (with latest successful attempt being today) and always had a problem with VMs. Once every blue moon it works on the VMs too though.
Thanks, that makes sense. Rolling back to the Dec rollup has solved the issue for me, so not sure what's breaking it on VMs with the Jan update. I'm leaving it with the Dec SMQR installed for now which doesn't seem to be causing any issues. I'm probably going to wait until next month just to see if something in the next rollup sorts it out. If it's down to legacyupdate then I'll leave it as a VM issue. My VMs are mostly 64-Bit now anyway.
You just got lucky most likely. I have this problem since legacy update became a thing back in April this is why i was late to adopt it. It was failing for my vms. Once I started updating the laptops directly it never failed, not even once. Once a while the vms will work as well but I have no clue why. At any rate don't waste time on this. Unless it is a fun thing for you as it was for me. In that case I can't save you xDD
It's definitely an issue that seems to be affecting the 32-Bit version. Haven't had any issues on the 64-Bit versions. Time to give up on Windows Update for the 32-Bit version of Vista, for me anyway. Will stick to the 64-Bit Vista VMs from now on (or for as long as it still works!) Definitely not fun!!
Nice guide! Are there Server 2008 (both x86 & x64) versions of this or similiar guides available? Or can you make it? I've tried replacing all Vista updates with Server 2008 and following the guide, The WU breaks, but I don't really care, I can keep updating it manually each month, but only if I get a (repeatable) mini-guide to do so. Thanks a lot! PS: With just 2 GB RAM, I am more keen on the 32-bit version.
Perhaps you can check these solutions: Bypass ESU for Server 2008 (and Vista) forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/bypass-windows-7-extended-security-updates-eligibility.80606/#post-1560451 Fix WU DataStore.edb forums.mydigitallife.net/threads/restore-windows-update-for-vista.82336/page-14#post-1775211 My two cents.
Hello again! Just wanted to say: Works on Vista SP2 x64? Yes, absolutely! (I may test 32-bit sometime later when I get a little bit too bored.) Here's what happens if you try it on Server 2008: (Yes, this isn't for Server 2008 but I tried anyway.) Steps 1-17 & 19 work without any problems! (Ignore graphics drivers not installing, Server OS on notebook should not be ever done...) Step 18 gets you "Updates not configured properly, rolling back changes." (Idk if this one happens only on 32-bit, 64-bit test was months ago) So it's like "half-installed"(?) because I still turned on the "Use TLS 1.1 & 1.2" settings. And there's the big one: Steps 20, 22, 26 are for Windows Vista only - 100% only Vista, Server 2008 isn't Vista, so these had to be skipped. (Yep, this is where I started to give up...) Continuing with steps 21, 23-25... I think these still work. (I gave up here.) Steps 27-30... Uhhh, I don't remember, I am sorry. (This is where it breaks?) But the step 31 worked last time I've tried it months ago. TLDR: Guide specifically for Windows Vista SP2 (x64) works only for Windows Vista SP2 (x64), don't try it on Server 2008 (32/64-bits both won't work here). Thanks.
But that bypass only have Net4Esu bypass, what don't work and need combine how install net with any problems, because WU don't let's on that. IE still need with sctipts install how net. All others ESUs SHA-WUC take. Of course need that data wu fix for work. So net i suggest repack and IE with sctipts what is put on forum. My two cents
The guide has been updated to reflect changes to step #18: February 2025 IE9 cumulative security update New batch file script
Doesn't work for me, after rebooting the update version still says RTM. Spoiler EDIT: It worked now, I ran the batch script from the command prompt and it successfully installed. Spoiler
Hello, a problem arose at step 18, when I started installing KB5051972_2025_02_CSU_For_IE9_For_WS2008.bat, the window appears and disappears, the loading does not take long (I did everything according to the instructions), later when installing IE9 it says that the system is not suitable for the update. Help me what should I do?
Place the batch file and the IE9 cumulative security update inside an empty folder. Right-click the batch file and then select to run it as Administrator.
